The Impact of Peer Pressure on Adolescent Behavior
Abstract
The study is based on data collected till October 2023. Based on interviews with adolescents aged 13–18 years, this study explores the complexity of peer relationships and peer pressure, encompassing both positive and negative aspects of peer behavior in this cohort. The literature review shows that peers can promote both good behaviors (like academic motivation and support) and destructive behaviors (like substance use, risky behaviors, and social conformance). Тhis study underscores that even the most regulated and controlled environments are not immune to the impact of peer dynamics on adolescent identity and behavior, noting that this necessitates parental and educational understanding to respond to these influences accordingly. Intervention strategies should also promote indirect peer relations and engender resistance to peer pressure in explaining the development of non-violent and aggressive behavior among adolescents and other young people.
