Abstract

A connected world with a new learning paradigm emerged from ubiquitous global mobile access to information. These developments have not, however, been without their challenges — specifically regarding educational equity, access to technological resources and digital literacy. Based on empirical data since October 2023, this qualitative study focuses on technological influence on education equity, considering students' access, use, and outcomes from different socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with educators, students, and administrators in urban, rural, and marginalized communities to collect relevant data. Despite technology's potential to help level the educational playing field, research shows that systemic inequities often widen the gaps between home and school, contributing to a widening "digital divide" that makes equal access to quality education increasingly tricky. The findings highlight the boundless potential of technology to create new opportunities and the need for comprehensive policies and targeted interventions that guarantee technology does not hinder equity. Such recommendations involve investing in infrastructure, implementing digital literacy programs, and ensuring equitable distribution of resources. It can be a powerful tool for promoting inclusive education and addressing persistent inequality.
